Welcome to the Slipstream tutorial!
--------
This tutorial has been known to produce 'unexpected' results... I think some of the values maybe wrong, at the moment I haven't the time to go through and check them but I'm leaving it up as I've seen some great looking slipstream's produced using the tutorial!
MODELLER
First of all press O and set the number of radial segments to 30. Select the disc
tool and in the Left view, while holding down the CTRL key, drag (With the LMB)
out a disc 2m across. Now in the face view drag, with the RMB, left untill
the display in the bottom left corner reads -9.2 m on the X-Axis. Now
select the Polygon tool (CTRL H) and draw a Circle around the end polygon on the
right with the RMB. Select the move tool and move the polygon to +9.2
m on the axis. Now press k, or press the Remove Polygon button under the
Tools tab. Do the same with the other end polygon. You should now be
able to see right through the cylinder. Press Q to bring up the Surface
requester. Type in an appropriate name such as Slipstream. Uncheck
the Double sided option and check the Smoothing option and leave the value as it
is. 89.5 it should read. Before we can use it in Layout press f to
flip all the polygons, effectively turning the tube inside out.
Use the PUT command to export it to Layout, saving it as
Slipstream.LWO. Now still in modeller press Q again and rename it
Slipstream Rings. Now use the PUT command again, selecting NEW,
and save this as Slipstream Rings. That's it for Modeller I think, so
switch to Layout.
Before you
do anything in Layout, go into the effects panel and select the Backdrop and Fog
tab. Set the Fog type to Linear and enter : 0 in Minimum distance,
100 km in Max distance and set the fog colour to Black (0,0,0)
Now select the Slipstream.LWO object and click the Size button on
the left toolbar. Press N to bring up the numeric requester, and enter
these values 3150 on all Axis. At this point it would be a good idea to
set the Grid Square size (Options panel) to 500 m :) Select the Slipstream
Rings object and press the size button, then N again. Enter 3175 in all
axis. Now onto the Surfacing :)
Let's start
on the inner tube first. Open the Surfaces panel and select the Slipstream
surface. We'll alter the base settings first : (Click for Larger
version)
Now that's done, select the Surface colour T button. Select the Fractal noise
texture and enter these values : Click for Larger Version.
Set the Texture size to (X, 2m) (Y, 9 cm) (Z, 9cm).
Texture velocity : (X, 1mm) (Y, 10mm) (Z, 10mm)
Click Use texture to return to the Main surfaces panel, now click
the transparency T button. Select the Fractal noise texture and enter these
values : Click for a larger version.
Set the texture size to : (X, 4m) (Y, 20cm) (Z, 20cm).
And set the texture velocity to : (X, 1mm) (Y, 10mm)
(Z, 10mm)
Now select the Only light in the scene and move it to the same
position along the XAxis where the camera is. In otehr words we wnat the
light in the same position along the xais as the camera. But you still
want it in the centre of the tubes. Next change it to a Point light (Light
panel). Press F9 for a quick test render and you should have something
like this hopefully :) Depending on where you position your camera!
I set mine towards one end looking back towards the other. The fog works
better that way.
Now for the Ring texture. Go to the Surfaces panel and select the Slipstream Rings
surface. For the Basic Values:
Now select the surface colour T button. Select the
Underwater texture and enter these values : Click for a larger
version.
Set the texture size to -80m on all Axis. That's it for the
Colour texture so press the use texture to go back to the surfaces panel.
Now select the transparency T button. Select Underwater as
the texture and enter these values: Click for larger version.
Set the texture size to -80m on all axis. That's it for all
the texturing so close all the panels and press F9 for another quick test
render. You should have something like this :
Almost finished, we just have to blur the rings a bit so they seem
more stretched and are more transparent.
At frame 0 the Position of the slipstream rings object should read the same as the
slipstream object 0,0,0 on all axis. Move the frame slider to frame 1 and
select the move button, then N for the numeric requester. Enter 1.2km in
the X Axis.
In the Camera panel, set the antialising level to Enhanced low, and click the Motion Blur and Dithered motion blur buttons. Move the frame
slider to frame 1 and press F9 for another quick render. this could take a
little while depending on what resolution you have it set at. If all has
gone well, you should have something like this:
That's it for the Slipstream, have fun with it!
To make the Transwarp conduit just change the slipstream colours to a light green and a darker green ;)
Hope it helps!
