Details using stencil and Smooth shift

Modeller:
Create a cylinder
in Top view 3m by 3m. Now extrude it down until the display in the
bottom right corner reads 3m. Select the top and bottom polygons and
remove them by pressing the K button. You should have this:

Assign a surface
to the tube. Tractor Beam will do just fine! Make sure the
double sided and smoothing options are selected. Press
ok.
Now save this object as TractorBeam.LWO and export it to Layout.
Now select the points along the top of the cylinder like this:

Now select the size button from the Modify menu. (this part depends on where you
position your ships!). Position the cursor in Face view in the
center of the points and size them to about 2%. Now select the
move tool and move the points straight up until the display reads
6m.
Now in Left view move the points to the left until the display reads minus 20m. Now
deselect the points and save this object as TractorMorph.LWO and export
it to Layout.
LAYOUT
Select the Objects button and select the TractorMorph object and set the object dissolve to
100%. Now select the TractorBeam object and set the Morph Amount
to 100% and set the Morph target to TractorMorph.
Now in the Surface settings select the Tractor Beam surface.
Select the colour button and enter these values - (R, 153) (G, 190) (B, 247). Now
select the T button and select the Fractal noise texture. Enter
0,0,0 as the texture colour. Click the Texture Size button and
enter (X, 35cm) (Y, 100m) (Z, 50cm). In the Velocity options enter
minus 10cm in the X and Z axis.
Press ok to go back to the Main surfaces panel. Set the base luminosity to
100%.
Select the Transparency Texture button and select Cylindrical Image Map and use this
image as the Texture map:

Make sure the Y axis button is selected then select the Automatic Sizing option and
press ok to return to the Surfaces panel. Save the
objects.
That about does
it! The final product should look like this :
