Details using stencil and Smooth shift
--------

Modeller:

First we'll need an object to create the Nurnies on! Because I'm in a hurry I'll just be making the nurnies on a simple object First of all make sure the grid size reads 50 cm in the little window down the bottom left of the screen.

THE DISPLAY

Next set the number of radial segments in the options panel to 6. Now select the Disc tool and in the Face view while holding down the Ctrl key, drag out a disc until the display down the bottom left reads 1.5M on the X and Y axis. Doesn't have to be exact.

THE DISC

Now extrude this disc out on the Z axis. Doesn't have to be too long so let's say until the display reads 3.5M. Press Q to open the Surface panel. Set the name to whatever you want. I used 'MainObject' because I don't have a brilliant imagination Uncheck the Double sided option, and set the smoothing value to 32. You should have something like this, again doesn't have to be exact:

THE MAIN OBJECT

Ok, now before we start on the nurnies we need to do one more thing. Select the smooth shift tool and smooth shift the entire object by 7cm. This just smooths the sharp edges of the object a bit. Cool huh? This bit is important, align all polys after that. Modeller has a tendandacy to flip some of the polys after the smooth shift.

THE SMOOTH SHIFTED MAIN OBJECT

Ok, now switch to an empty layer and we'll start on the Micronurnies! Now with the Main Object in the background layer, create these shapes (you can create whatever shapes you want really) with the pen tool.

THE NURNIES

Now extrude your nurnies up on the Y axis about 2M. so that they go over the top of the Main Object like this. Open the surfaces panel again and set the surface of your nurnies to something like, err...Nurnies?

THE EXTRUDED NURNIES

Now switch layers by pressing the ' key. Drag the RMB around the top half of the Main object to select the top polygons like this:

SELECTINGTHE TOP POLYGONS

Now Press the Solid Drill button or press Shift C. Select the Stencil button, and select the Nurnies surface in the drop down box. Press ok to Stencil your nurnies onto the main object.

THE STENCILED NURNIES

Now open the polygon statistics panel by pressing W or by going to the Display tab and pressing the Statistic button. Select the Nurnies surface at the bottom and press the + key by the 'With surface' text. That should have selected all of the nurnies you stencilled on like this :

SELECTING THE STENCILED NURNIES

Now press the smooth shift button again. Smooth shift the selected polys by 2cm. Now select all the polys with the Nurnies surface, same way as you did before. And smooth shift them again at 2cm. Align the polys to finish and you should now have your final nurnied object

FINALE!

Hope that was of some help to you! Happy nurnying! Ed Giddings
