Welcome to the Tutorials section!
--------
Ok, we'll start off by creating the Profile curves for the Saucer.
You'll need to load your schematic into modellers background.
Select the Points tool and, in the Face view create some points at key locations along the profile.
Ok, with any luck you shold have something looking like this:
Now you'll need to create 3 curves from these points. I say 3 as it's much easier to surface the Saucer if you seperate the curve into different parts.
OK, now starting at the top left point, select all of the Top points like this:
Press CTRL+P to make these points into a curve.
Now go back to Point selection mode (PSM) again and make sure there are no points already selected.
Select the last point you selected before and the next point down then Press CTRL+P again.
You should have this now:
Ok, again make sure there are no points currently selected in PSM, and starting with the Last
currently selected point, select all the points along the bottom in sequence, then make a curve again.
Now go into Polygon selection mode and select all the polygons.
Press CTRL+S to smooth them.
Now before we Lathe it we'll have to assign a few surfaces.
Select the Top curve only and assign it a surface of: "Enterprise_A-TopSaucer" or something like that!
Deselect it and select the smallest curve at the front of the profile. Assign it a surface of: "Enterprise_A-SideSaucer".
Repeat the procedure again for the bottom curve.
Ok, now we're ready to lathe it!
First of all, check the number of radial segments in the options panel.
To have a nice smoothed Saucer I'd go with nothing less than 80.
Ok, Lathe the curves and if all went as planned you should have something like this: (Click for a larger version!)
It's important to save this object at this stage. BasicSaucer.lwo will do nicely :)
Ok, next lesson will cover the detailling.....
Proceed to PART 2.
